THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
In spite of the disturbing effect of the charges of corruption brought by Mr Hearst against prominent Republican leaders, the Republican party in the United State 3 still claims to be confident of electing Mr Taft as President. This may be regarded as a claim made to encourage faltering supporters, for the Democratic party similarly claims to be sure of a majority for Mr Bryan, but some credit may be givenlo the latest forecast, from the White House itself, owing to the reduction in the number of votes claimed. A few months ago the Republican party was confidently claiming that at least 350 votes would be cast in the Electoral College for its candidate, while now the forecast of Mr Roosevelt barely exceeds 300 votes. It will be seen at once that this reduced forecast implies a recognition that the fight will be much more serious than was once anticipated, and we may, therefore, assume that the Republican party has lost some ground, although probably not enough to spoil Mr Taft's chances.
