AN UNEMPLOYED PROPOSAL.

Probably nothing more will be heard of the proposal of the Melbourne unemployed that the Commonwealth Government should pay the passages of a number of them to New Zealand. No Government which is influenced as strongly by the Labour Party as is the case with Mr Deakin's would be likely to help any body of men to emigrate from Australia, unless it wanted to commit political suicide. If the Federal Government spends any money on the unemployed, it will doubtless be devoted to keeping them in the country. It is admitted that Australia's greatest need to-day is population, and it would be the worst policy, just as an effort is being made to induce settlers to come out, if Government aid wa3 given to a number of men to enable them to get out of the country because they could find no work.
