TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.") Form again worked out satisfactorily at Otaki, yesterday, three previous day's winners scoring, while the other events were won by horses that filled places on Wednesday. Toa Tuhi proved speedy enough at the weights to account for Lord Soult, Duart and Flotilla. The winndr will be seen out at the Masterton meeting this Lyrist, who seems to have struck form, and is jumping more confidently, won the Hack Hurdles in good style from H<itley. Lyrist's double win at the meeting emphasises the fact that the winner of the Hurdles at a meeting on the first day generally manages to repeat the performance on the next, notwithstanding somewhat substantial increases in weight. With lranui out of the way, King Post had nothing special to beat in the Otaki Hack Handicap, and the Menschikoff colt, Roosevelt, again showed his sprinting capabilities by winning the Trial Handicao, of five furlongs. Daisy Paul and Toa Tuhi being scratched, left only Irish Rifle and Swimming Belt to fight out the issue in the Demonstration Handicap, of seven furlongs. The Musketry gelding failed to concede Swimming Belt 221bs in weignt, and in order to accomplish this he would certainly need to be a real first-rater. When they meet again during the season they will be placed nearer in the matter of weight.

At Napier Park, Forest, who is jumping steadier than he did at Hastings, won the Hack Hurdles from i Ancyle, and thus repeated his first : day's performance. Monarque accounted for the Koropiko Hurdles and rewarded his supporters with a good price. The Nursery went to Merigal, who shaped well at the Hawke's Bay meeting. For the Racing Club Handicap, Voetgang was withdrawn, leaving seven to go to the post. A New Zealand Cup candidate, Moral, showed that he is forward in condition by winning from the speedy filly, Chanteuse. Those who have bscked the big son of The Possible and Fair Nell have reason to be pleased at his performance. The field he accounted for was not one of exceptional merit, but the horse won ■ in really good style. »The nicely-weighted Andrew Mack and Gold Treasure filled the dividend paying places in the Telephone Hack, and Vi and Magneto fought out the issue in the Scurry Hack. Both these horses are speedy and will be heard of again during the season. At|Opaki yesterday morning only good working exercise was indulged in. The inside grass track was used, and no fast gallops were witnessed. The horses out were Merrie Rose, Lucretius, Bonnie Scotland filly, Rose Herald, Gaelic, San Julie, Kiltie Lass, Skye, Putewhai, Blue Ribbon, Culver Lass, Petroleum mare, Afterthought, St. Paul colt, gelding by Bonnie Scotland, Hinerangi, Riflemaid, Tumut, Sunbonnet, Osiris, and Sealer. Among the most forwsrd of the Masterton horses are Blue Ribbon, Lucretius, Merrie Rose, Gaelic, San Julie, Skye, Sealer, Sunbonnet, and Rieflmaid. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Moloch, has been spelled during this week, as he is suffering from a severe cold. The stopping of his work at the present juncture is decidedly unfortunate, as it will interfere considerably with his Cup preparation. A. Watson has just put into work at Opaki a thiee-year-old filly by Sir Galahad-Mrs Shannon. At Otaki on Wednesday, F. Cress rode Duart and Roosevelt to - victory, T. Carroll was successful on Investment, and S, Reid scored in the principal event on Irish Rifle. J. Ayers, the well-known trainer, of Featherston,' contemplates shifting to Trentham. Being most painstaking with the horses entrusted to him he should soon have a good team in work. The defeat of California at Napier Park this week will not cause the interest to be lessened in the Wellington Handicap, in which he will meet those good performers Zimmerman, Gold Crest, Gold Beater, arid Frisco, as well as several other performers ■> of merit. Should the majority of the acceptors face the starter there will be great excitement at Trentham next Wednesday afternoon.
