MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. The Masterton Borough Council met last evening. There were present,— The Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) and Crs J. H. Pauling, J. J. Hunter, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, and J. Prentice. The Borough Ranger (VV. Davidson) waited on the Council to ask why he had not received payment for the killing and burial of an aged horse impounded about March last. As there was a discrepancy in the date stated by the Ranger as that on ■which the horse was impounded, and the entry in the poundkeeper's book of the same occasion, the question was held over until the next meeting of the Works Committee, when the Ranger was instructed to be present, and if possible to have the discrepancy explained. The Council decided to remit rates duejjy an old age pensioner, amount- ( ing to 10s 9d. Mr F. King applied for a one-inch ■water service for his residence in Hogg Crescent, agreeing to pay for the-water by meter.—The application was granted. Mr W. S. Lett applied for an extension of the water to section 29 in Jean's Estate. —The application was referred to the Works Committee, for the Engineer's report thereon. Mr Donald, who has been carting the crushed metal from the. Fernridge, wrote stating that of the two heaps of .metal he had finished carting the one nearer to town, and said that'he could not see his way to carry out the carting of the farther heap except at the increased price of 4s per yard.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Mr R. Brown wrote accepting with thanks the offer by the Council of the positions of Borough Valuer and Returning Officer. Mr Brown made reference in his letter to the fact that it was the Mayor who had had the honour of introducing to the Municipal Conference the proposition regarding the superannuation of municipal servants, which became law this session.
The Mayor said, in regard to Mr Brown's reference to superannuation, that it was really to Mr Brown himself, as was well known, that the honour was due of being the author of the idea. He trusted Mr Brown would.live long to enjoy his new office under the Council. The Council adopted without discussion the report of the special committee set up to fix the hours for the use of the Public Baths.
