FIRE AT DUNEDIN.
BY TELEGRAPH —PItESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, October 10. The candle works department and machinery of M'Leod Bros., Cumberland Street, were destroyed by fire shortly before eight this morning. The offices and soap works were left untouched. The fire, which broke out in the candle department, had a very strong hold by the time the MayOatway alarm brought the brigade, whose efforts succeeded in keeping the blaze to one department, the stock and machinery of which were wholly destroyed. The stock consisted of hydraulic pumps, hot and cold pressers, steam engine and general working gear of the stearine department. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as there were no furnaces in the rodm, heat being supplied by steam. About two hundred tons of fat on the floor above were destroyed. The total insurance on all the buildings and works were £22,500, and on the depnrtment destroyed £4,150, which it is estimated will not cover the loss. The principal insurance is with the Guardian office, which loses about £I,OOO. The South British and Liverpool, London, and Globe lose about £BOO each.
