FIRES.
A HOTEL DESTROYED.
■ By Telegraph—Press Association. OAMARU, October 6. A large wooden hotel of 28 rooms, known as the Kurow Hotel, at Kurow, "?as totally destroyed by fire at mid-day today. The fire i°- supposed to have started in one of the bedrooms upstairs, and in half an hour the building was completely destroyed. Some of the furniture and stock in the lower storey was saved. Buildings near the hotel were in danger for some time, from the flying sparks and stock from stores atid furniture from houses were removed. The railway station was for some time in danger, but happily nothing but the hotel was destroyed. The building was owned by Mrs Delargy, and wis injured for £9OO in the South British office, while the furniture and stock of the licensee (Mr J. Cahill) was insured for the most part in the National office for £6OO. FIRE AT BURNSIDE. BY TELEQIJAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, October 5. The Co-operative Fat and Tallow Company's works at the cattleyards, the principal shareholders in which are butchers of Duuedin City, was destroyed by fire at about 11.30 tonight. The information to hand is that the building has been burned to the ground, and everything destroyed. The building and machinery i are set down as being worth about ! £I,OOO, while there was prepared manure on hand to the value of about £350. There would also be a quantity of tallow on hand, but the exact amount is not available. The actual loss, therefore, is not ascertainable. The building and plant were insured in the Manchester office, but the sum is not available. ,It is stated, however, that the Company will suffer heavy loss. REGARDED WITH SUSPICION. DUNEDIN, October 6. At the time of the fire at the Cooperative Company's Fat and Tallow Works last night, fifteen tons of tallow, worth £SOO, were on the premises; also about fifty tons of prepared manure, valued at £250. This was all ready for delivery. The company recently installed new machinery and added to the buildings. The outbreak is regarded with suspicion as the company has been subjected to a lot of annoyance, and had to invoke police assistance. Recently a large quantity of fat was maliciously poured down the chimney of the kiln, the buildings being completely destroyed. It is impossible to ascertain the origin of the fire. All that is known is that the fire started at the south end. The insurances amounted to £BOO in the Manchester Office. The loss is roughly estimated at £I,OOO in excess of the insurances.
