GERMAN UNDERCUTTING. Received October 5, 10.9 a.m. ADELAIDE, October 5. German companies have secuied a contract for 10,000 tons of coke for the Wallaroo smelting works. It is stated that owing to cheap freights by arriving wheat ships, German makers are able to undercut Australian cokemakers out of the market. A LEVEE BOYCOTTED. Consuls of the various Powers boycotted the first levee given by Lord Dudley, the Governor-General, owing to their privilege of private entree being withdrawn. TENDER FOR TELEPHONES. Received October 5, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 5. The Postmaster-Genera! has invited Australian firms to tender for | 10,000 wall telephones. If the response is satisfactory, the number will be increased to 30,000. SYDNEY CHARITIES. Received October 5, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, October 5. The combined city charities street collection yielded £1,126. A FRUITLESS SEARCH. Recaived October 5, 10 a.m. ADELAIDE, October 5. The steamer Taieri, from New Zealand, has arrived. She fruitlessly searched for the barque Loch Lomond. EIGHT-HOUR DAY DEMON- j STRATION. Received October 5, 9.55 p.m. SYDNEY, October 5. At the Eight-hour Day Demonstration to-day 57 Unions were rep- ! resented in the procession, including J se;eral new Unions. The banners and trades devices produced a fine spectacular effect. A number of expensive banners came to grief in the heavy gusts of wind, being ripped to pieces. Great crowds witnessed the procession and sports on the Agricultural Society's Grounds. Andrews, off the 260 yards mark, won the Eight-hour Wheel Race. Horder secured the Mile Championship of New South Wales, and the Five mile Scratch Race. ALLEGED BREACH OF PROMISE. Received October 5, 9.55 p.m. SYDNEY, October 5. A writ has been issued at the instance of Miss Ivy Salvin, an English lady, now residing in Sydney, claiming £5,000 damages from Bigwood, the husband of Carrie Moore, for breach of promise. Miss Salvin alleges that purchased Lord Northcote's motor-car for her for 420 guineas. An injunction will be applied for to-morrow to restrain Bigwood from dealing with the car.
