THE WHANGAPE.
PICKED UP BY THE TOFUA. The Union Steamship Company's steamer Whangape, 2,931 tons, the tail shaft of which broke on the afternoon of trielSth September, while the vessel was on her way from Wellington to Suva has been picked up. Such was the pleasing news conveyed in a Press Association cable message from Suva, received at 10.20 a.m., yesterday, and confirmed by the following telegram from Dunedin (also sent through the Press Association): — "The Union Company has been advised that the Manuka, which left Suva yesterday for Brisbane and Sydney, picked up the Whangape. The Manuka is going into Suva now with the Whangape in tow." When tho Whangape broke down the vyeather was fine, and Captain Chrisp despatched a boat on Monday, September 1 21st, the steamer beingthen eighty miles from Suva. This boat was picked up by the Atun, bound for Fiji, and conveyed to port. The Atua left next morning to try and pick up the Whangape, but returned to Suva on the 25th, having failed in her mission.
