HOMING PIGEON CLUB.

FIRST RACE OF THtt SEASON.

Yesterday the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club opened its season with a race from the Summit. Tb» weather was very favourable for 8 "fly," and although so early in the season no less than nineteen bircs representing eleven lofts, comp^etea.

The air distance from the Summit ie, roughlj, miles, and the winning nird, Mr L. Wadham's "His M»i p stv," cut out the distance in minutes, or, roughly, at the, rate of a mile a inuiiue, Ute actual velocity being 1,734 yards per minute.

The second bird to arrive was IV *• H. L Pickett's " Whetumarama,"' which bird registered a velocity of 1,480 yards. "Flashlight," owned by Mr A. Miller, was third," with a- veolcity of 1,463. It will be seen that the winning bird performed a very creditable feat being 254 yards a .minute faster than the second arrival.' Mr R. W. Dixon, of New Plymouth, and Mr F. B. Rosson, acted as judges. The winning bird was bred by Mr 11. Moverley, of New Plymouth,, and its time for the race will, probably stand as a Club record for some time. The trapping of the birds as they came in caused some new members of the club annoying delays, but when a few races have beeq flown these difficulties will be overcome. The next race will be flown from the Upper Hutt, on Thursday next.
