CHESS.

An interesting chess match was played at Carterton on Friday evening between teams representing the North and South Wairarapa. The game of the evening was that played between the two captains, Mr F. W. H. Kummer and Mr T. E. Maunsell. At 12 o'clock neither player had the advantage, each having a rook and three pawns. At this stage of 1 the game Mr Maunstll gave his opponent an opportunity to gain a pawn, which was promptly taken, and the game, after lusting over five and a half hours, ended in a win for Mr F. Kummer. Although South Wairarapa was badly beaten, the play was by no means one-sided, all the games Ining keenly contestd, and opponents fairly evenly matched. At the conclusion of the match Mr F. Kummer expressed the pleasure his team had derived from the visit and the victory, and hoped that would be the first of many similar meetings between North and South Wairarapa. Mr Maunsell replied on behalf of South Wairarapa. Cheers were then exchanged. The scores were as follows: JMorth Wairarapa. South Wairarapa. F. Kummer 1 T. Maunsell 0 W. Kummer 2 W. Mooru 0 C. Winchester 1 H. Walder. 1 G. A. Jones 1 W. W. Avery 1 J. Dagg 1 W. F. Roydhouse 1 D. Guild 2 H. Kidd 0 A. Dagg 2 M. U. McGoun 0 H. Kummer 2 F. Bladen 0 J. Winchester 1 R. W.
