FOOTBALL.
In connection with the competitions in Melbourne, Essendon, the second club on the list, recently met the fourth team, Collingwood, on the Melbourne ground before a crowd of nearly 30,000; £I,OOO was taken at the gates, la being charged for admission to the ground. The contestants had already met twice, each side being credited with a nanow win. After Collingwood's fine victory over South Melbourne a week earlier a close game was expected, but the anticipation was noi; realised. The half wes finely contested, but after the interval the Magpies tailed oft', and did not score even a minor point in the third quarter. The "same old" were the heavier team, and showed superior dash and pace. The weather, which had been ruyty and gusty during the morning ima proved for the game, but a heavy thu.'iderstorm at the termination sent the spectators home wet. The final results were:—Essendon, 9 goals 14 behinds 168 points); Collingwood, 5 goals 3 behinds (33 points).
