"HEROES OF PEACE."
■MR CARNEGIE'S LATEST SCHEME. Received September 9.30 p.m. LONDON, September 25. Mr Andrew Carnegie has given £250,000, which will produce an income of £12,500 per year towards the .foundation of a fund ip the United .Kingdom to reward the heroes of peace by the maintenance of their widows and children. Mr Carnegie states that we live in a heroic age, and are often thrilled by deeds of heroism where men and women are injured or killed in attempting to preserve or rescue their fellows. These iheroes of civilisation ought to be freed from pecuniary cares, resulting from their heroism. iMemand women are treated alik« under the fund. Sailors, railvaymen, nurses, doctors, police and firemen in the British Isles and waters thereof are eligible.. Trustees will administer the fund. His Majesty the King approves of the scheme. The trustees are directed that whenever King Edward expresses a wish regarding a case his will is .to be law. Mr Carnegie has now distributed thirty-four millions.
