FIRE IN LYTTELTON GAOL.
By Telegraph—Press Association. LYTTELTON, September 24. At 9.35 a.m. to-day a fire was discovered under a staircase of the Lyettelton Gaol Hospital, close to the door of a room on the ground floor in which Lioiiel Terry is lodged. Some burning papers and piece of mat were found under the stairs, and a warder on the watch-tower noticed smoke rising from the staircase. The flames were extinguished with a few buckets of water. ' •JLhe staircase wa3 only slightly damaged. Had the fire not. been seen soon the staircase would have been destroyed, but as the surrounding walls are concrete, no other damage would probably have resulted. Terry would make neither an ad • mission nor denial regarding the fire. He had access to the staircase, as the door of his room was open, as was the outer door close by leading to the hospital yard. The yard is surrounded by a high iron railibg with a gate, which is kept locked.
