CHARGE AGAINST A REFEREE.
AN INTERESTING CASE. . By Telegraph —Press Association. NELSON, September 21. A case of interest to footballers was heard at Takaka tfy Mr H. Eyre Kenny, S.M., a referee being charged with assault. Complainant was a spectator at a match, and in his enthusiasm encroached upon the field of play. He remarked upon a ruling of the referee, who thereupon put him off the ground. Detendant said he understood a referee had sole charge of the ground on the occasion of a match, and that he was acting within his rights. The magistrate said he had no cases before him to show what legal authority a referee possessed, but he held that defendant acted bona fide in the belief that he had authority to eject complninant from the enclosure. 'lhe charge was dismissed, with costs £3 9s against complainant.
