"THE MAY QUEEN"
"The May Queen" was fi2*st produced at Crystal Palace, London, as an opera. It has since become popular with musical societies as a cantata. The composer (Sterndale Bennett) is one of the best English *.omposers; there is not an uninteresting bar from cover to cover. The poam deals with M,ay-day lestivitits, and the discomforture of the lover through the May Queen's inconstancy. A dramatical episode occurs in Robin Hood's intrusion, and bid for the "May Queen's" 'favour. The principals at the Choral Society's rendering on Monday in the Town Hall are Mrs- S F. P. Wilson (May Queen), Mis 3 Clara Robson (Queen), Mr Charles Saunders (Lover), Mr F. Hunn as Robin Hood. Mr Charts Saunders will sing "Come into the garden, Maud," nn.l "Sound an alarm." Miss Clara Robson will sing "Caller Herrin," and "Darby and Joan." Mrs E. P. Wilson will sing "Love's Echo."
