THE EUROPEAN WAR CLOUD.
The statement made by Sir J. H. ex-Premier of New South Wales, upon the prospects of international trouble as observed by him during his recent visit to London, is worthy of notice. He confirms the warning which has been repeatedly given aa to the general uneasiness in Europe; and it is simple arithmetic to deduce from this the imperative necessity of placing our colonial defences upon a more satisfactory footing. That the Imperial authorities are gathering their naval strength into the vicinity of the British Isles is matter of common knowledge, and it is quite possible that in the circumstances there ia no strong
objection at the Admiralty to the formation of an Australian navy for coastal defence. For such a "navy" would be 9 auxiliary to any squadron which the Imperial Government considered necessary for the protection of Imperial interests ,in the Pacific of Indian Oceans, although not in itself, adequate for the naval defence of the Commonwealth.
