DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.
The Journal of the Department of Labour for September contains the following concerning Alasterton, Tinui, and Greytown :—• Tinui.—Building trades: All'local carpenters have been fairly employed during the month. "Retail trade: Still slack and showinc; no improvement on last month, •owing to the flooded rivers an J bad .state of the roada, which prevented people from coming into tiia tovvn.s tiip. Miscellaneoua: Blacksmithing trade is much better than it was last jnonth, and no doubt will improvj -with the advent of fine weather. ' Unskilled labour: All local men are fairly wall employed at scrub-cutting, ploughing, fencing, dam-making, .quarrying stone, for road metal, and .at road work. Several swaggers passed through here during the .month. Twelve of them secured em.pijyment at road-making at 9j per »<ay, and 14s for food per week; fivu «o i d:rub cutting at la per hour, and 14s per week for food; and the others Kent travelling on in seare.i of suitemployment. There are several "\a: good pick and shovel nun in this district at the present itrne at 9s per day, and 14s per week ijf food. Masterton. —There is no improvement in the building trades. A number of carpenters and .bricklayer? are -still out of employment, and indica- / tioin do not point to any immediate v .alteration. The coichbuildiug trade ,i 3 up to the standard, and all tailois •and cailoreasas are fully employed. building trades still continue dull. Coichbuilding: Good, with a fair •amiunt of wirk still in hand. Engineering: Trade has slackened .off considerably. Moulding: Very' busy, with prospects of continuing so. Saddlery: All hands fully employed. Motor and cycle trades (repairs): >.G.iod. ' Furniture trade: Good. Joinery: Slack. Piu.nomg and tinsmithing: Quiet. Dressmaking and millinery: A ■fair volume of business is reported. Boot trade (repairs): Good. , . General blacksmithing: Only moderate. Tailoring: Very good; all hands are fully employed, but no overtime has been woriced. Retail trades (general): Satisfac- . tory.. Unsidlled labour: There were applications for employment during tho month. Five single men, one married couple, and one tailoress were placed in employment. Greytown North.—Building trades: Very slack. Clothing trade (factories): Fairly busy. Ketail trade: Fairly good. Unskilled labour: Local men fairly w?ll employed. No room for outsiders at present.
