PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 16. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 o'clock. The Wellington and Manawatu Railway Purchase Bill, Public Bodies Leases Bill, Inspection of Machinery Amendment Bill, and the Impounding Amending Act Amendment Bill were read a first time. The Fire Brigades Amendment Bill 1908, and Destitute Persons Amendment Bill passed the final stages. The Council adjourned at 5 p.m. HOUSE OF" RERdSLNTATIVES. In the House of Representatives, Ministers replying to questions, stated that a committee to enquire into the methods adopted by the Press Association, in charging heavy fees to newspapers before they are allowed to participate in the use of telegraDhic news, will be set up next year; that the Government has decided to appoint a Royal Commishion to enquire into and report on the question of import duty on timber in with the sawmilling industry; that the railage charges for timber cannot be reduced at present.
