THE WATER-RATE MISTAKE.
When the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) told the Borough Council last evening that a mistake had been made in regard to striking the rate of the water-rate he simply emphasised what was perfectly obvious to tho ratepayers days ago. If the Mayor considered that his statement was of an illuminating character his belief, in our opinion, must be the result of his having been abaent from the town during the past week. To blame ths newspapers for tha attitude they have adopted in regard to the mistake is merely the height of absurdity. Why did the Mayor not .xpLui haw th: ini:ti!;e t-.ro.c? Seeing that many rat payers have been considerably perturbed in regard to the incorrect notices sent to them we cannot help expressing the opinion that they are entitled to more than the brief explanation tendered by the Mayor. We put it to his Worship had the ratepayers calmly agreed to the demands made would the Council have accepted the increased rate, or would they have decided to collect only a portion of the rate levied?
