THE ALLEGED SLUMP.

There is, unfortunately, a very unhappy disposition on the part of some people to take un extremely pessimistic view of life and ut t'tings i" general. In Masterton "ilie rvotker" is somewhat of an active p-TMUHlity. and in some instances he appears to have been letting his tonguj beyond the bounds of discretion. When the whole community is inttrofted in the stability and good business reputation of the town it is difficult to conceive why • anyone 'should be anxious to exaggerate a condition of affairs that can scarcely be'regarded, as even a tempora-y state of mild depression—certainly it is not worse. The money market is, unquestionably, »n a stringent state at the present time, but from inquiries made among the business people, it may be said that trade is by no means dull for this season of the year. Another drought, similar to that experienced last year, would do a good deal of harm, but why should the immediate repetition of an unusual occurrence in the Wairarapa be anticipated? We think we cannot be accused of

impiety when we say that the predictions of weather, prophets may be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, and we are not aware that any weather prophet has definitely promised the Wairarapa another drought.
