Hemp— Market quiet. OctoberDecember, £26 2s 6d. The wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,855,000 quarters: for the Continent, 1,725,000; Atlantic shipments, i.51,000; i-ucihc, 20,000 quarters. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following «abld from the High Commissioner, dated London, September 12th, 1908: The mutton market is somewhat steadier, on account of the bmall supply of beef, but there is only a moderate demand. Canterbury brands are quoted at 4£d, and North Island at 3§d per lb. The lamb market is quiet, and the demand is falling off. Canterbury lamb is quoted at 5Jd, and other than Canterbury at od par lb. There is a better demand for beef, •which is hi snii.ll supply. New Zeaand beex is being held for a rise in price. Hindquarters are quoted at Jjd, lorequarters at 3gd per lb. The butter t market is quiet but firm, and there 1 is a good demand. Butter shipped by the s.s. Wakanui arr.ved in good condition, and is quoted at 119s, Siberian 108s, and Canadian 115 a per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with an improved demand. Canadian makes are quoted at 61s par cwt. 'J he hemp market is slightly weaker, with less denmr.d. The following are the current quotations:—Good, fair grade, on spot, £27; fair grade, on B{,ot, £23; fair current Manils, on spot, &t'6, lOs; Uctober to December shipmentsi are quoted as follow: Good iair grade, £26; fair grade, £23; fair current Manila, £23 10s. Last week's output from Manila amounted to 24,000 hales. The cocksfoot seed market is very uncertain, and there is very little New Zealand on hand. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed, as prices are too high. Bright clean 171b seed is quoted at 90i per cwt., nominal. American is quoted at 803.
