QUEENSLAND ENTERPRISE.
NEW STEAMSHIP SERVICE. Received September 11, 8.10 a.m. LONDON, September 10. The Premier of Queensland (Mr Kidston) has sailed on his return to Queensland. While in England he completed an arrangement with the British-India Steamship Company for a steamer service in the Tories Straits. The company receives a subsidy of £37,000, and provides a thirty-five days' service between London and Thursday Island. A steamer will run monthly, commencing in October, and will call at Cairns, Townsville, Port Alwa, and any other port which offers 150 tons of cargo, returning via the Cape. Uniform freight rates will be charged from all Queensland ports. The steamers engaged in the service will be of 5,500 tons register.
