EAR-MARKING FLOCKS.
1 The Stock Committee submitted a . recommendation to the House of Rep- i resentatives on Thursday that the j Government be requested to make enquiries with a view to bringing ' in aomu improved general wystem of ear-marking (locks. The submission . of the report elicited some interesting remarks. The Minister said that in the early days the sheep-owners had been considerably fewer than now. To-day 20 or 30 settlers required ear-marks where probably <me was wanted betoro. It was now ver> difficult tu find sufficient combinations in earmarks to distinguish between owners in a small area. Before a sheep reached the it required sometimes to be ear-marked a dozen times. It was admitted the present state of things was not satisfactory, but the head of the Department had been doing his best for a number of years to overcome the difficulty. No satisfactory substitute for ear-marking had yet been found.
