PRACTICALLY SOLD AS SLAVES. RETURN HOME AFTER MANY YEARS. Received September 9, 8.50 a.m. SYDNEY, September 9. A party of Gilbert Island natives, who, seventeen years ago, were "recruited" and sent to Guatemala, Central America, where they were practically sold as slaves, returned by the steamer Aoraugi, the British Government having secured their freedom and paid the cost of their repatriation. The party altogether numbers 59, but only ten are Gilbert Islands, the remainder being their Guatemalan and Indian wives and children.
