THE MANAWATU RAILWAY.
It is a matter for congratulation that there is now a certainty that the transfer of the Manawatu Railway to the Government will be effected without the prolonged and costly arbitration which at one time seemed probable. An important feature on which Sir Joseph Ward laid stress in his statement in the House of Representatives on Wednesday with reference to the sum of a million sterling, for which provision is being made in connection with the acquisition of the railway, is that over and above £900,000 to be paid to the company for the line and its appurtenances and the additional payment for stores, there will be a sum of £70,000 available for the improvement of the railway, which is evidently contemplated along its whole length.
