ON ISLAND OF PONAPE.
WHITES ALARMED
A GERMAN PUNfTIVE EXPEDITION. Received September 7, 9.57 a.m. SYDNEY, September 7. Island news show* that inter-tribal fighting is progressing on the island of Ponape. The white residents are alarmed, and have asked for protection. The German authorities in New Britain have despatched a punitive expedition of 100 police.
Ponape, or Ascension, Island is one of the Carol ; ne group and lies between the Philippines and the Marshall Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, and to the north of German New Guinea.
