At a meeting of the Committee ,of tne Canterbury Cricket Association the Hon. Secretary reported that ne had received the following communication from Lord Hawka:—"l ha\e pleasure in informing you that I Ime engaged E. Humphreys, of Ker.t, for your Association. He is one of the most reliable mai in their eleven, and I have the very greatest confidence that he will give you every satisfaction. A very good all-round man is what you want, and I really consider I have been lucky in getting him, He will sail with Rejf as eoon as the season is over. I hope Jjs will bear out alj I haVfi him. With ever;; good wish for the success of cricket in New Zealand, yours very truly, Havvke. July22n(, 1908." Satisfaction was expressed at the choice, and the Hon. ENGLISH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP.
BT TELEGBAPH—PBESS ASSOCIATION. Received September 4, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, September 3. In the cricket match Yorkshire versus Marylebone, Denton scored 133 and 121. The final positions in the counties championship are Yorkshire, first; Kent, second; Surrey, third; Middlesex, fourth; Sussex, fifth; Worcestershire, sixth; Lancashire, seventh; Notts, eighth. Notts was first last year; Worcestershire and Yorkshire, equal, second; Surrey, fourth; Middlesex, fifth; Lncashire, sixth; Essex, seventh; Kent, eighth.. LONDON, September 3. The VSportsman" says that Marshal, the ex-Queenslander, has developed into a brilliant player, and is probably the best all-round man in the Surrey eleven.
FOOTBALL.
A football match, Hibernian Lodge v. All Other Lodges, will be played on the Showgrounds to-day at 3 p.m. NORTHERN UNION GAME. SOUTH CANTERBURY TEAM By Telegraph —Press Association., TIMARU, September 4. The provisional selection of a team to represent South Canterbury under Northern Union rules against the Invercargill touring team comprises nine of this year's and four ex-Rugby reps.
