TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland"). By winning the Marton Handicap on Wednesday the Greytown-trained mare Silken Rein showed a return to form. The Saracen mare was turned out in excellent condition by H. Fletcher. In the race she was ridden by T. Carroll, who is reported to have handled her with good judgment. The Mauser gelding Don Carlos has been sold to Mr P. Debreceny, of Pnhiatua. He ran in his new owner's colours at the Marton meeting this week. The Conqueror colt purchased by Mr W. D. Watson at the Waikanae stud sale early this year has been taken in hand by M. McGrath. He is a very stylish colt, of nice size, and showing plenty of quality. He is built on galloping lines, and looks like one that should race early. Sandix, who was blistered in the winter, is to be spelled during the summer, and will therefore not be raced again until next autumn. The withdrawals from the New Zealand Cup include Multifid, Truce

Uhlander, Campfire, Coralie and The Rand. The first acceptance is due to-night! when the list will be further shortened. Entries for the Stewards' Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting are due on the 18th inst. Moloch is to be ridden in the New Zealand Cup by R. Hatch,, and H. McKay will have the mount on Riflemaid. It is considered improbable that Gravitation will be able to compete in the C.J.C Dt rby. The colt has developed thoroughpin, and this may necessitate a lengthened spell. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Master Soult, injured one of his fet- < locks last week. There are doubts as to whether he will be able to race at Avondale this month. Lothair, winner of the . Shorts' Handicap, at Marton, was purchased last week by Mr W. Tat ham, wellknown as the owner of Jeanne d'Arc, for £l5O. The work of erecting a new Stewards' stand at Taratahi course has been commenced. It will be finished in time fur the Club's annual meeting, when the improvements effected are sure to be greatly appreciated.
