A VISIT TO WINDSOR.
EXPERIENCES OF A MASTERTONIAJN.
Mr Geosge Ward, a well-known old Masterton resident, returned from a visit to the Old Country yesterday. Mr Ward, who has been several months away, came as far as Sydney by the s.s. York, and from there to Wellington by the Moeraki. He states that the tour resulted in his health being materially benefited, while he greatly enjoyed his holiday. Mr Ward had a unique experience at Home, in that in paying a visit to a brother of his, who has been em • ployed at Windsor Castle for thirtv years as watchmaker, he was shown over the historic place in a way few visitors are fortunate enough to be shown. He was escorted through the multitudinous underground passages, through to the State apartments, in fact through the wonderful Castle from end to end. He saw the room which the muchmarried English monarch Henry VII. and Anne Boleyn, one of his Queens, used as a boudoir, and also the St. George Memorial Chapel. These places greatly impressed Mr Ward, who was shown particular attention on account of being a visitor from far-away New Zealand. He" was given many interesting relics, among which were a menu from the Royal table, a piece of the beam of the original curfew bell at Chertsey (recently renewed), a piece of oak from St. George's Chapel, a liqueur decanter, once owned by the King, and n wine-glass owned by the late Queen Victoria. Several of the mementos were given to the donors by their Royal masters, and thus have special value. Mr Ward said that at a garden part} given by the King at Windsor oight thousand persons were invited, the number of motor-cars conveying the guests, and gathered in a section of the grounds, being two thousan d seven hundred.
