TALL BUILDINGS.
Manhattan Island is so narrow that the steadily increasing demand for business offices in New York has been met by maki n g the buildings taller instead of'broader. In no other city of the world are there so many sky-scrapers. There are seven exceptionally lofty buildings, whije an eighth has been designed which, when constructed, will be the highest in the world. That honour is at present held by the Metropolitan Tower, which is 46 storeys, and is (557 feet high. Next to this coti.es the Singer building, which has 41 storeys, and is (512 feet in height, while the others are as follow : Times building, 28 storeys, 419 feet; Park Row building," 29 storeys, 332 feet; Pulitzer building, 22 storeys, 375 feet; American Surety building, 23 storeys, 305 feet; Flatiron building, 20 storeys, 28G feet. The projected new building is to be erected by the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and,.,it is to be of 62 storeys, with a height of 909 feet. The building will coat £2,000,000.
