GREAT LOSS OF LIFE
HUNDREDS OF BOATS DESTROYED. Received September 1, 9.26 a.m.] PORT DARWIN, Sept. 1. Eastern files show that in the late typhoon at Hongkong, eight hundred business buats and junks, eleven guard ships, four revenue cutters, and twenty steam launches were detroyed, along with the river steamer Ying King. The Ying King carried four hundred and thirty passengers (including two Europeans), of whom only twelve wre saved. The drowned included Captain Page and the two European passengers. The less of life during the typhoon was vary great, and will probably never be accurately known. Four hundred houses were destroyed.
