THE WHITE FLEET.
CELEBRATIONS IN MELBOURNE.
Received August 31, 10.48 p.m. MELBOURNE, August 31. To-day was a great ceremonial day. The principal attractions were the offiical landing at St. Kilda, procession through the streets, presentation of addresses and the public reception at the Exhibition Buildings. Hundreds of thousands thronged the streets, and every point of vantage was availed of. The day was disagreeably windy and dusty. It is doubtful if so many people have ever been seen in Melbourne before. The Admirals were enthusiastically cheered along the whole route. Received September 1, 1.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 31. It has transpired that the special authority of Congress is necessary before Admiral bperry can assume po£ ession of costly presents made dung the cruise. The regulations prev nt Admirals accepting presents. Admiral Sperry has provisionally accepted the gifts pending the decision of Congress on the matter.
