POPULATION OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
Accoi'ding to the quarterly estimate of the population of New South Wales issued by the Bureau of Statistics, the number of persons in the State is 1,532,619, comprising 845,387 males and 737,232 females. During the quarter the males decreased by 1,205, and the females increased by 1,951, leaving a net increase of only 746 persons. There was an excess of births over deaths amounting t> 6,203, but an excess of departures over arrivals of 5,457. The migration record was the worst shown since the March quarter of 1901. In 1907 the excess of arrivals was 3,749; in 1906, 2,853; and in 1905, 2,299. The loss during the quarter was both to the other States of the Commonwealth and to countries beyond Australia. To the former the net loss was 5,010, and to the latter 447. The only countries from which there was a gain were Tasmania 810, New Zealand 1,979, Canada 109,, Hongkong 63, India 4, South Africa 231, and New
Caledonia 238. The greatest losses were to. Queensland 3,757, Victoria 1,012, South Australia 997, and the Unitod Kingdom 1,766, the latter in spite of 579 assisted immigrants having been received therefrom.
