BOXING.

THE BURNS-SQUIRES CONTEST. Received August 25, 9.35 a.m. SYDNEY, August 25. The "Herald" says, regarding the Burns-Squiresfight: "The issue leaves no doubt as to the respective merits of the two men. Barring accidents, Squires would be beaten by Burns every day in the weak, and that in spite of the fact that the Australian prevailed during nearly the whole of yesterday's fight, and at every stage was an undoubted winner on points. The differenco between the two men is that Squires is a pugilist who has developed powers to a high degree, but ia still only a pugilist, while Burns is a scientist who has applied his brain to solving the problem of the knock-out. Added to his scientific precision of boxing is his capacity for taking punishment, which is almost superhuman. It may be possible to hurt Burns with a battleaxe, but most of those who witnessed his performance will be inclined to doubt it." Burns states that it was one of the hardest fights of his life. Squires, he ssys, is one ot the gornest and strongest fighters he has ever met; he could beat most of the heavy weights in the world. Squires, who was not much distressed by the punishment he had received, said: "What I want is two or three more fights, and then if 1 don't win, my name is not Bill Squires." It ia stated the takings at the gate totalled £13,400.
