HOCKEY.

The Wairarapa Ladies' Association have been granted the use of the Wairarapa Hockey Association's ground at Lansdowne on which to play the final of the ladies' tournament to-morrow, and this match, together with the Masterton-Greytown match will be played there instead of on the Schoolgrounds as formerly decided. The final tournament game in j which considerable interest is being i displayed will commence at 3.40 o'clock. The Wanganui ladies' team intend to tour Wairarapa next month, and besides playing a match against the Kia Toa team will play a match against a combined Masterton club. The latter match will take place on September 16th. Next month Wellington is to be invaded by over a hundred young ladies armed with sticks; but there will be no nee:; cj reinforce the city police. The regiments from Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Wanganui, Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago are not coming to Wellington to demand the right to sit in Parliament. It is to be purely a peaceful mission, and though the sticks are to be plied briskly, no bones are likely to be broken. The girls are going to wage war upon one another on hockey fields. It is expected that nearly 140 feminine athletes will come from outside districts for the tournament which is to begin on September 4th and continue for a week. The contests will be in two grades, senior and junior, and should provide a good week's entertainment for persons of leisure. Wellington, after all, is to have its lleet week—with Atlantasdoing the fleeting. The conference will prove that hockey has captured woman's fancy, and it is holding it fast. A few years ago a girls' hockey match was regarded as merely a droll episode, a matter for laughter for the plnyers and onlookers. But the time has come when the girls have their well-organised clubs, associations and tournaments. Man's monopoly of outdoor sport has been prettily broken up. A committee id working vigorously to arrange the programme of serious hockey work and such incidental distractions as dances and afternoon tea parties.
