THE ADMIRAL'S REPLY.
Received August 21, 10.55 p.m. SYDNEY, August 21. i The Lord Mayor presentel Admiial Sparry with an illuminated address of welcome from the City. Admiral Sperry, in replv, said: — "Let me say that at daylight, yesterday, we found more people than we ever saw assemb'ed on the cliffs around, and when we thought the supply of people exhausted we taw on the downs more and more lill it seemed as if there must be a million people giving us a welcome. Such a greeting could not but impress one. it must have been something more than mere curiosity; it must have had some deeper meaning—sympathy and feeling between the English speaking people." After thanking Lord Northcote and the Federal Government for the I glorious welcome the Admiral said: — "Nothing could have been more gratifying to us than the remarks of the distinguished Admiral-Governor of this State in welcoming us as a sailor. We learned from the glorious traditions of the British Navy to hope that our people under the shadow of the fleet must rest secure with-

out undue and burdensome military expense. Nothing can cross in the face of the fleet as long as the flag floats over it, and if enemies did c-0.-s they could not maintain their position. We hope, as in the days when the gallant admirals maintained their position, in toe winds and weather, sickness and shipwrecks, in storms or channels and off the coast of Toulon; and watched over the seas tnat great fleets might not combine against you —we hope now, and very happily not in war, but in peace, to learn that same lesson of concentration and of development of the symmetrical fleet complete in all its parts, information, supplies, and personnel and our lesson has come from the glorious J traditions of the British navy." I
