THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
It is easy to imagine, indeed it would be difficult to exaggerate, the influence that the Main Trunk railway will have on the development
of the North Island. Settlement has been progressing rapidly along the route, and people from all parts of the Dominion have been flocking to the North Island in anticipation of the stimulus that will be given to business of all kinds by the opening of the through line and by the settlement of areas hitherto neglected. The "Lyttelton Time a '' says that the people of the South Island freely admit that the immediate future belongs to the North, and that they regard the position without a shadow of jealousy, because they recognise that the whole Dominion will share in the ascession of wealth and prosperity.
