THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.

INCREASED WAGES ASKED FOR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, August 12. At the Arbitration Court, to-day, an application for a new award by the Southland Sawmillers' Union, asking for an all-round increase in wages of Is a day, occupied all day in hearing. Twenty-six witnesses were called for the Union to give evidence as to wages and conditions. Mr Scott, representing the employers, said that they could not entertain the proposal for an increase. The industry was suffering a heavy depression, owing to over production; ninety per cent, of the mills were in rough country, wher'j the cost of production was high, and the mills were overstocked, and had no orders coming in. The Association had already discussed two proposals, one to close for a day in each week, and che other to shut down altogether; but no decison had been made so far. The industry could not possibly carry an additional burden of increased wages. Evidence for the employers will be I taken to-morrow.
