MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mapterton County Council was held in the Chambers yesterday afternoon. There were present Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), C. C. Kebbell, J. Morris, J. Colquhoun, J. Miller, W. Harris. A letter was received from the Treasury advising remittance of £1,823 13s Id, subsidy for 1907-8 The Receiver of Land Revenue wrote advising remittance of £IOO Liverton's thirds. Mr R. Brown wrote on behalf of Mrs Barker, Te Whiti, re threater ed closing ot road to her property, and asking the Council to prevent such being done or to lay oft" another road. The Clerk of Awards notified that the Arbitration Court would sit in connection with the labourer's dispute at Wellington on August 25th, and at. other places mentioned (including Masterton). Messrs Anketdl Bros, wrote giving permission for the removal of the infectious diseases hospital from their property. Mr H. G. Williams wrote asking the Council to take over the new metalled road on Lansdowne. A letter was received from Mr J. Maeara regarding the neglect of the County Council in allowing the Wanvaehu stream to be obstructed, and stating that he had suffered considerable damage through the flooding of his land. Unless immediate action was taken to remedy the trouble he intended claiming compensation. Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P., wrote stating that he had made apolication for a grant of £1,500 for the Wera-, iti-Stronvar voad. The Chief Engineer of Roads notified that the application to have vVingate's road grant re-voted would receive consideration. Mr G. Laing-Meason wrote giving details of estimate in connection with the Opaki and Lansdowne water schemes. The former to cost £2,275, and the latter £4,305. Mr P. Carr wroti protesting against settlers on the east side of the Ruamahanga river being permitted to erect a stop bank to prevent an overflow.

Mr E. H. Waddington wrote claiming £IOO damages for an accident met by his wife and daughter at the Waipoua bridge, through being thrown from a gig, which struck a broken post projecting on to the roadway.

A latter was received from the Public Trustee stating that no money was available for the Opaki and Lansdovvn water supply loans at present. Mr H. Holmes wrote declining to make a grant towards the maintenance of the Matahiwi road. Mr G. H. Perry wrote asking for a contribution towards the cost of confinirg Serpentine creek within its proper banks.

A letter was received from Mr J. C. McKillop suggesting 1 that the bridge about to be erected over the Wangaehu stream be placed high enough to allow the water to pass underneath in flood time. He suggested that the bottom of the stringers should be placed eight inches higher than the decking of the present bridge. It was resolved to inform Mr J. C. McKillop that the engineer had instructed to make the bridge over the Wangaehu slightly higher than the present one. The Council decided to leave the question of the grant asked by Mr G. H. Perry in the hands of the representative of the riding. It was decided that the letter from Mr G. H. Williams be left in the hands of the representatives of the riding with power to act. The Council resolved that it could not see its way to pay Mr J. Andrew for stripping dons at the To Ore Ore pit in connection with his metalling contract. It was decided to ascertain from the Survey Department whether a legal road ever existed connecting Mrs Barker's property with the Mas-terton-Gladstone road. The Council resolved to inform Mr Carr that the matter referred to in his letter does not concern the Council. It was resolved to inform Mr Gill that the plans were to be prepared at once for tne bridge over the Ihuraua river on the Moroa road, and that tenders would shortly be invited for the work. The letter from Mr H. G. Williams was left in the hands of Ct Harris and the Engineer for a report to the next meeting of the Council. The Engineer was instructed to take steps to compel the owners,of land abutting on the Wangaehu river to clean out obstructions in the stream, and that Mr Macara be informed of the Council's resolution. It was resolved that the promoters of the Opaki and Lansdowne water schemes be asked to s.-t up a committee to act with the Council Clerk in raising the money required for carrying out the schemes. Thfi Engineer was instructed to carry out repairs to Ihe road in front of Mr John McKenzie's property a: Wangaehu. A motion was passed levying the rates as agreed upon at the last ingOn the motion of Cr Kebbell, it was decided to call alternate tenders for metalling a portion of Mt. Baker road.
