STILL ANOTHER.
STRIKE OF TRUCKERS. TROUBLE AT KAITANGATA . BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, August IJ. A sensation was caused at Kaitangata yesterday afternoon when it became known that the truckers at Kaitangata mine had refused in a body to truck. It appears that one of their number, Allan Whittaker, was dismissed for leaving his place on Saturday without permission, and as the boys did not consider the management explanation satisfactory they refused to work until he was ieinstated. The trouble happened just as the afternoon shift had reached the pit bottom, and vvt-re about to start work, and as a consequence of the deadlock the mine was then thrown idle for a shift. The manager considered Whittaker unsuitable, and unable to do the work and gave that as the reason for his dismissal. The truckers, on the Jther hand, contend that he can do work equally as well as the average trucker. Some confusion was caused down the mine, as the horse drivers left their horses where they stood, and came out with the rest. The mine manager was present at a big meet'ng of truckers last night, at which the situation was discussed. The manager said he would not unreservedly reinstate Whittaker, but was willing to take his case into consideration if he applied for work. After the departure of the manager the truckers decided that unless Whittaker was reinstated they would not go back. The miners went on morning shift as usual t'j-day, and! about eight truckers accompanied them. There is general belief that the strike will fizzle out.
