MISHAP TO A STEAMER.
AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph. —Freds Association. WHANGAREI, August 11 . At four o'clock this morning the steamer Kaja.iui ran agiound en a sand-bar.k off Mangawai when on her way from Auckland to Whangarei. A rather big sea was running at the time. The vessel lay for two hours bumping alarmingly before getting off. The position seemed a rather precarious one for a period. Life-belts were served out to the passengers, who were all called on deck. In the midst of the trying predicament a large ship's lamp crashed down on the deck and exploded, causing a conflagration, which was put | under with some difficulty owing to the high wind blowing. The boats were prepared for launching, and sume of the passengers stripped in anticipation of a swim for life, but there was no evidence ot panic, the utmost order and coolness prevailing. The Kapanui arrived safely at the tiwn wharf about 8 a.m., apparently uninjured. This account was supplied by several passengers. The captain, however, makes light of the mishap. He denies that any danger existed at any time, and that there was need for lifebelts.
