The whole of the Kootenay country away from the railway lines is a seething- mass of flames. The ruins of Fernie are smouldering.
Grave fears are entertained for the safety of Michel, arour.d which bush fires are raging. In the Kootenay Valley, mining and smelting operations are crippled, throwing ten thousand men out of work. Unless help is forthcoming many children must die. Thousands of dollars are being sub ■ scribed in Canada and the United States for the relief of the sufferers.
MINES SHUT DOWN
ANOTHER TOWN THREATENED,
Received August 6, 11.45 p.m. VANCOUVER, August 6. All the mines in the Crow's Nest region are shut down, and the miners are figh'ing the bush fires. The town of Coal Creek, where there are 1,500 people, is also threatened by the fire, which is within three miles, and cuts off escape by the west, except for two Indian trails over the mountains, over which it is impossible for women and children to traverse.
