SEVERE EARTHQUAKE IN ALGERIA.

Shocks last six hours. PUBLIC' BULIDINGS DAMAGED. PEOPLE TERROR STRICKEN. Received August 6, 8.32 a.m. ALGIERS, August 5. An earthquake, lasting six hours, occurred :it Constantine and Philippeville, in Algeria. The shocks Were so severe that every public building was cracked. At Constantine the population was terror-stricken. The people assembled half-dressed in the squares.

Constantine is one of the three chief ports of Algeria, and the population is abcuS 50,000. Philipptville is a seaport, about 38 miles northeast of Constantine.
