The Department of Industries > and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, datad London, August Ist, 1908: The mutton market is dull. Trade is very disappointing, there heihcj only a very hend-to-mouth demand, and the supply exceeds the demand. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 4d, Noijth Island at SJd, and Rivef Plate at 3Jd per lb. . . s The lamb market is a shade weaker, but there is a good demand for _ prime quality lambs. Stocks on hand are heavy, and are beingwvidely distributed amongst agents who are pushing sales. Canterbury brands are quoted at s|d per lb for heavyweights, 5Jd per lb for light weights; other than Canterbury at s£d per lb. The beef market is. qui<?t, and*' stocks of New Zealand! brands on hand are liglit. The weathet lately has been unfavourable to the sale nf beef. Hindquarters are.quoted at 4d, forequarters at 2Jd per sb. , The butter market is quiet, but , firm. Supplies are increasing, but there is a good demand, and no stock is accumulating. The prospects for .. next season are encouraging. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 116s, Danish 122s k Siberian 108s, and Canadian 116s>per cwt. The cheese market is quiet, but • steady. Coloured makes are quoted at 595, white at 62s per cwt. The hemp market is. dull. There is very little business doing, and no change is prices to report. \ The cocksfoot seed market is un settled, and speculative. American crops sire being offered, and it is anticipated that the crop will tall short of the estimate. Nominal quotations are American 80s, New Zealat.d 85s, for bright clean 171b seed. The hop market is dull, owing to the English crop promising well. Wool sales closed Ist August. Americans are buying and shipping suitable parcels 4'reelyy and the demand is likely to continue at present quotations. The following are the estimated'values:— Superior merinos, , lO&dtols; medium merinos, 8d to „ lOd; inferior merinos, 6d to TJd; fine crossbreds, all grades, lOd to medium crossbreds, all grades, 8d to lOd; coarse crossbreds, all grades. 5Jd to Sid.
