A STEAMER ASHORE. Received July 31, 5.42 p.m. SYDNEY, July 31. The steamer Mareeba, from Brisbane to Newcastle and Sydney, with a large, general cargo, went ashora in thick weather on the Stockton Beach. There are hopes of re-floating the vessel. The crew are safe. Received July 31, 9.3 p.m. SYDNEY, July 31. The Mareeba arrived off Newcastle last night, but owing to the heavy weather the Captain decided to stand by till daylight. She grounded at 4 o'clock in the morning in dark, dirty.weather, and lies broadside on. She is well up on the sandy beach. 'I he crew had little difficulty in landing. The captain and some of the crew are standing by: An attempt to tug the vessel off failed. Another effort is to be made to-night.

SCULLING

Received July 31, 9.30 p.m. SYDNEY, July 31.

Much interest is being taken in the Arnst Pearce sculling race tomorrow, in view of Arnst's engagement with Webb, champion of the world. Both men have put in a lot of training, and are reported to be in tip-top condition. A hard struggle is expected. The weather contritions are not promising. Frequtnt drenching showers continue, and there is no sign of it clearing.

CATTLE ADVANCE IN PRICE.

A SERIOUS QUARREL.

Received July 31, 10.50 a.m. HOBART, July 31. As the result of a quarrel, a man named Hudson, 22 years of age, shot a girl named Bradley in the back and clubbed her brother-in-law with a gun, fracturing his jaw and skull. The victims are in a low condition. Hudson has been arrested.
