FARMERS' UNION CONFERENCE.

BY TEIiKGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 31. The Farmers" Union Conference, to-day, passed the following resolutions:—That in order to encourage of forest trees, all land over one acre in extenc planted with forest trees should be exempt from land tax and local rates; that the annual rental of post office boxes and bags, where letter carriers do not exist, be reduced to the cost of the initial outlay of such boxes, etc.; that the Conference strongly protests against the proposed Shearers Ac commodation Bill as being harassing, impracticable and unnecessary, and that representation be made to the Minister; that the Union expresses satisfaction that the proposal first enunciated by the Farraer/s' Union that the Dominion should contribute a larger naval subsidy has been practically adopted by the Government in raising the subsidy to £100,000; that the Government be requested to amend the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act in the direction of subsidising the general rates of local bodies on a graduated scale; that this Conference is opposed to any change in the electoral law in regard to abso-1 lute majority or second ballot. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr J. G. Wilson; vicepresident, Mr Leadley; treasurer. Mr A. E. Russell; auditors, Messrs Rutherford and McConnell; advisory board, Messrs Birch, Cooper, Hichards and McGregor. Messrs ilones, Evans and Acton were warmly complimented on the good fight they had put up on behalf of the farming community in regard to the Canterbury farm labourers' dispute. , It was decided that the Union cannot see its way to federate with the Employers' Federation.
