THE VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT

BY TELEGRAPH —Pi E S ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., July 20. In formally opening the new orderly room of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, to day, the Governor said that he had always considerable sympathy with the volunteer movement. The volunteers of New Zealand had proved that thpy were always ready to assist the Empire in time of need, and though there had in the past been complaints of mismanagement he knew that the Government were keenly interested in the movement, and appreciated the work done. He knew the views of the Premier, and the Hon. R. McNab and the individual members of the Defence Department, and could say with authority that any suggestions made by the officers of the various corps to the Department through the proper channels would receive genuine consideration. He complimented the officers and men of the corps on their smart appearance. Lord Plunket also suggested the establishment of a military library in connection with the new building, and gave £5 to form the nucleus of a fund to that end.
