VOLUNTEERING.
All true lovers of liberty will strenuously oppose anything savoring of conscription, tut then, if this is to be avoided, greater interest must be taken in volunteering matters. For instance, in the outlying localitiefl rifle clubs could be formed, and these would form important auxiliaries to the main corps in the district. 'Rifle shooting should become a pleasure and a pastime. There are countries in which rifle shooting has become a national pastime, and a little more of that feeling in New Zealand would be productive of good. The individual sacrifice would be slight, and the collective result would be of incalculable benefit. The Government will be lacking in their duty, remarks the "Greymojth Star," if they do not give all possible encouragement to the vulunteer, while the citizen will also bb blame-worthy if sympathetic support is not given to the movem ;nt.
