CONNELLY PERJURY CASE.
FURTHER SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WESTPORT, July 25. There was a further sensational development in the Connelly perjury case this morning. Mr McDonald, for the prosecution, obtained the Court's permission to call another witness, Johanna Phillips, widow, s(nd a member of the Salvation Army 'for twenty years. This witness stated that on the night of Bourke's murder she saw two men, a young fellow and an aged man, coming across the street from Price's corner towards the shed (where Bcurke was subsequently found dying). She saw a scuffle, and saw the smaller man of the two strike a match. She saw Mrs Maria Pearce (who had previously described seeing Connelly assaulting Bourke) standing in the street, but did not speak to her. Witness had not told her story before, because her health was bad. She some times had fainting fits. She knew Hallinen and Andersen were innocent of the murder, and thought there was enough evidence, and as she had never been in Court before she did not think she could get through the trial. The on!y notable point arising from the cross examination was that witness identified a young man who took a hot-water bottle to the shed after the discovery of the body as the man who was previously with the big man, whereas Hannan said the young man carrying the hot-water bottle was the witness Murray. The Magistrate practically struck out six of the thirteen counts of perjury, but ruled that there was a case to answer on the others covering the main charge that Connelly committed perjury in swearing Andersen killed Bourke. Accused pleaded not gilty. Mr Hannan intimated that he would call evidence for the defence. One witness was examined, and the Court adjourned till Monday.
