TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.")
Good racing was witnessed at Trentham on Saturday. Aboriginal ran up to form and beat Rangipapa fairly easily in the Onslow Handicap. The black gelding has incurred a seven pounds penalty for the Winter Cup, but is a probable starter for that event. Vasa was made a firm favourite for the Crofton Hack, but Skye soon took charge of affairs, and won in good style from SandstreamVthe favourite running third. A field of nine faced the starter for the Hack Hurdles. Ghoorka was looked upon as the most likely candidate to score*, but in a good race he had to give way to Immolation. The pane was on all the way, and the winner put up a good performance. The July Steeplechase brought out Loch Fyne, Tilson, Le Beau, Bullworth, Lingerer, Valima, and St. Amelia. The two first mentioned were evenly backed, Le Beau also having plenty of supporters. The race was a good one to witness, and in a good finish Loch Fyne won from Tilson, with Lingerer third. Tilson did not stay as well as expected, and will probably find the three and a half miles in the Grand National rather far. Le Beau did not give a good jumping exhibition and will require plenty of schooling before running at Riccarton. A nice field of ten ran in the Winter Oats. The issue was expected to be between Sir Frisco and California. The former did not run up to his best form, and California won comfortably from Mabaranui and Landwern. The San Fran-Dazzle colt thus registered his third win at the meeting, and his admirers claim that he is one of the best seen out in New Zealand for some time. He is certainly a most consistent animal, but to a certain extent remains with the handicapper whether he continues his victorious career. Great interest was manifested in the Final Hurdles, as no less than eight Grand National Hurdle candidates were taking part. Compass fell soon after the Btart, and Exmoor toppled over soon after. Scotty and Defeat were interfered with and lost ground. Capably ridden by C. O'Neill, Letherin had charge \of affairs in the concluding stages, ;jnd staying on in good style won in a convincing manner. Silkweb scored iii'the Kia Ora HacK from the fastfinishing Royal Maid. The latter again dwelt at the post and lost ground at the Btart, and will need to get away from the barrier quicker in order to have a chance of winning. Lfltherin and Skye, winners at the Wellington meeting, were both bred by Mr James Macara, of Masterton. Skye is leased to Mr J. Chisholm, and Letherin is owned by Mr J. O'Meara, who was warmly congratulated on his win. The Lethe gelding will be taken down to Riccarton to run in the Grand National Hurdle race, in which he will now have to carry list lib.
